Project Banned Drugs
There are a number of organisations and individuals around the world that have already gathered information and done research regarding the availability of harmful medicines in the market. The ‘UN Consolidated List of Products whose Consumption and/or Sale have been Banned, Withdrawn, Severely Restricted or Not Approved by Governments’ (Eighth Issue, Pharmaceuticals, 2003) is one such publication which provides information on products harmful to health and the environment.
In spite of these efforts to disseminate information about harmful medicines, there are some harmful medicines which have been banned in developed countries that are still available in the developing world. The aims of this multi-country study were to provide information about a selected number of the most harmful medicines present in the region, and to document the results of the registration status of these medicines so that interested parties could work toward banning these pharmaceuticals in their countries.
The efforts toward the prevention of the use of irrational and hazardous medicines (Project IFDCs) and their withdrawal is part of the broader campaign in the fight for rational medicine use and rational medicines policy.
