Annual Planning and Governing Council Meeting 5 – 7 September 2011, Penang, Malaysia

From 5 – 7 September 2011, Health Action International Asia Pacific  convened its Annual Planning and Governing Council Meetings in Penang, Malaysia.  Fourteen members from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Philippines and Malaysia  were present for this three day event organized and hosted by the HAIAP office at the 1926 Heritage Hotel, Penang.  Over the first two days 5 and 6 September 2011, key HAIAP members reviewed activities carried out from May 2010 to May 2011 from its new operational office at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang.   Members present at the meeting were:  (i)  briefed by the HAIAP Coordinator,  on HAIAP’s  Strategic Plan for the Future, which had been circulated to the membership in January 2011 and (ii)  asked for  input into two new projects initiated by the HAIAP office .   Members from Sri Lanka, Australia and the South Pacific and Pakistan shared important country reports and developments in health, with the larger group.

On the third day, 7 September 2011, GC members and the HAIAP Advisory Group met  to discuss various administrative matters.

Eulogy for Dr Balasubramaniam

“I stand before this gathering of family, friends and loved ones of Dr Balasubramaniam and I am at a loss for words that will be a fitting tribute to this much loved man.

Since his passing, which I still cannot come to terms with, I have received an outpouring of degrees of emotion from all his associates in Health Action International, ranging from disbelief to great sadness. There have been many personal requests from so many who could not be here today, to share their messages – but they are too many and time is too limited. So I shall pass those messages on to Kamala…”

Tribute to late Dr Balasubramaniam

In August 2011, The Lancet, ( Volume 378, Issue 9792, Page 660, 20 August 201) published an article as a tribute to the life and work of the late Dr Balasubramaniam, who retired as HAIAP’s Coordinator end December 2010.

Dr Bala was so many things to those of us whose lives he touched – friend, mentor, health activist, researcher, keen intellectual, crusader. His demise on 19 April 0211, is a loss not only to the HAIAP family but to the international health community. The article is published in full below.

Together with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Kelaniya and WHO country office in Colombo, HAIAP convened a regional consultation on ‘Undergraduate Medical and Pharmacy Education’ in Negombo, Sri Lanka between the 24th and 26th of August 2009.

Asia-Pacific Conference on FTAs and their Impact on Access to Medicines 2008

HAIAP together with the Drug Study Group (DSG), the Health & Development Foundation as well as the Social Pharmacy Research Unit (SPR) and the Health Consumer Protection Program (HCP) of Chulalongkorn University, Thailand hosted the Asia-Pacific Conference on ‘FTAs and their Impact on Access to Medicinal Drugs’ in Bangkok, Thailand between the 25th and 28th of August 2008.
